Press Release – We strongly condemn the unfounded attacks on the abbot of the monastery Visoki Decani

We strongly condemn the unfounded attacks of the Council for the Defence of Human Rights and Freedoms in Kosovo (CDHRF) on the abbot of the monastery Visoki Decani, Fr. Sava Janjic. Help and protection received by Albanian refugees in the Visoki Decani monastery in 1999 are a unique example of humanity in the madness of war.

The statement issued by CDHRF does not support the statements of both this Council and Kosovo officials that Visoki Decani and the Serb community in Kosovo are not endangered, and that enlisting the monastery as one of the seven most endangered cultural monuments in Europe, organized by the pan-European federation Europa Nostra, is unjustified. On the contrary.

By attacking Fr. Sava Janjic with severe and unfounded accusations, the Council for the Defence of Human Rights and Freedoms in Kosovo is undermining all efforts to painstakingly build better interethnic relations between Albanian and Serb society in Kosovo. We emphasize that the same organization has stood out in the past in spreading false news and interethnic hatred, primarily directed towards the Serb community in Kosovo.

We demand from the institutions of the Government of Kosovo and international representatives in Kosovo to clearly condemn the positions of the Council for the Defence of Human Rights and Freedoms in Kosovo, and to provide all necessary protection and support to Fr. Sava Janjic and the Visoki Decani monastery.
